Chris Brown Avoids Prison After London Nightclub Bottle Attack, Gets 8-Month Suspended Sentence

LONDON, October 26, 2026 — Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown avoided immediate imprisonment on Monday after a London court handed him an eight-month suspended prison sentence for attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at a nightclub in 2023.

The 37-year-old American R&B star was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to affray in July. Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as dangerous but ruled that Brown could remain outside prison, citing his guilty plea and other mitigating circumstances.

Chris Brown Sentenced Over London Nightclub Bottle Attack

The incident occurred on February 19, 2023, at Tape, a private nightclub in London’s Mayfair district.

According to evidence presented in court, Brown confronted Diaw, a music producer and former friend, before repeatedly striking him with a heavy tequila bottle.

CCTV footage showed Brown hitting Diaw twice in the head with the bottle before continuing the confrontation. His friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also became involved.

The violence lasted approximately 20 seconds. Diaw subsequently received treatment at St Mary’s Hospital in London for head trauma and knee-related injuries.

Judge Explains Eight-Month Suspended Prison Sentence

Judge Baumgartner said striking someone in the head with a glass bottle created a serious risk of injury, regardless of whether the most severe possible harm occurred.

However, the judge considered Brown’s guilty plea, personal circumstances and the time elapsed since his previous convictions.

The court also acknowledged his established music career and charitable activities while emphasizing that celebrity status did not justify special treatment.

Brown received an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. He will not serve the sentence immediately, but committing another offence or breaching applicable requirements during that period could result in imprisonment.

The ruling does not mean Brown was cleared of wrongdoing. He admitted affray, a criminal offence involving unlawful violence that would cause a person of reasonable firmness to fear for their safety.

Chris Brown’s Vocal Coach Also Avoids Immediate Jail

Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray for his involvement in the confrontation.

He received a four-month prison sentence suspended for one year. Both defendants were ordered to pay ÂŁ1,500 in court costs each.

The judge identified Brown as the principal participant in the violence, explaining the difference between their sentences.

More Serious Charges Dropped After Guilty Plea

Brown initially faced additional allegations, including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Those charges were dropped after his July 2026 guilty plea to affray, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison in England and Wales.

Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, apologized on his behalf and told the court that he regretted the incident.

Manchester Arrest and ÂŁ5 Million Bail

Brown left Britain following the February 2023 confrontation but was arrested at a Manchester hotel on May 15, 2025, after returning for a scheduled concert.

He was subsequently released under a ÂŁ5 million bail arrangement, approximately $6.7 million at the time, allowing him to continue his Breezy Bowl XX world tour across Europe and North America.

In an official Metropolitan Police statement, investigators confirmed the sentencing and highlighted the efforts made to pursue the case after the defendants left Britain.

Chris Brown’s Legal History and Career

Brown rose to fame in 2005 and has won Grammy Awards for “F.A.M.E.” and “11:11 (Deluxe).” His career has also included legal controversies, notably his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Judge Baumgartner acknowledged those previous convictions but considered Brown’s more recent record when deciding against immediate imprisonment.

The ruling adds to recent entertainment developments, including Val Chmerkovskiy’s Dancing With the Stars suspension and the Strictly Come Dancing hosting controversy.

Brown can continue his career outside prison, although his suspended sentence remains in force for the next 12 months. For Diaw, the judgment formally addresses the criminal violence that occurred more than three years earlier.
