Palisades Charter High School has officially welcomed students back to its Pacific Palisades campus, marking a major recovery milestone more than a year after the January 2025 Palisades Fire damaged the school and forced classes into a temporary location.
The return took place on Jan. 27, 2026, after months of disruption for students, families and staff. School leaders said roughly 40% of the campus was burned in the wildfire, making the reopening a significant moment for a West Los Angeles community still rebuilding from the disaster.
Key facts
- Return date: Jan. 27, 2026
- Campus impact: about 40% burned in the 2025 fire
- Temporary site: former Sears building in Santa Monica

A homecoming after a difficult year
The first day back was planned as more than a routine reopening. Parents, neighbors and alumni were encouraged to line nearby streets and greet students as they returned to campus. The school band, faculty members and student ambassadors helped create a welcome that reflected both relief and resilience.
Videos shared by the school showed supporters cheering, holding signs and applauding students as they arrived. For families who spent months adjusting to temporary classrooms and new commutes, the scene offered a visible sign that normal school life was beginning to return.

Executive Director Dr. Pam Magee described the return as a symbol of unity after a year of uncertainty. In a message to the school community, she acknowledged that the reopening may bring mixed emotions for families who are still processing the losses caused by the fire.
“After a year of resilience and adaptability, our school community will finally be back on our beloved Palisades campus… This return marks more than just a change of location — it’s a powerful reminder of our strength, unity, and commitment to learning.”
Why the reopening matters for Pacific Palisades
The Palisades Fire began on Jan. 7, 2025, and became one of the most damaging wildfire events in the Los Angeles area in recent years. The Eaton Fire also broke out the same day near Altadena, adding to the wider regional emergency.
For Palisades Charter High School, the damage was not only structural. A school campus is a daily anchor for students, families, teachers and local businesses. Moving classes to a temporary site helped education continue, but it could not fully replace the role of the original campus in the community.
The reopening shows how long recovery can take after a major wildfire. Even after flames are contained, schools and neighborhoods often face months of repairs, safety checks, insurance work, cleanup and emotional recovery before daily routines feel stable again.
The return also comes as California communities continue paying closer attention to wildfire planning, school safety and disaster recovery. More updates from across the United States can be followed through the latest USA news updates .
