Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades is officially welcoming students back on campus, marking a milestone moment for a West Los Angeles community still living with the aftershocks of the January 2025 wildfires.
In a message shared ahead of the return, the school encouraged parents and neighbors to line nearby streets on Tuesday morning to help greet students as they arrived. The request carried extra weight: about 40% of the campus was burned in the fire a year ago, forcing the school into a long stretch of disruption and temporary relocation.
Quick facts at a glance
- Return date: Jan. 27, 2026
- Campus impact: ~40% burned in the 2025 blaze
- Palisades Fire toll (reported): nearly 7,000 structures destroyed; 12 civilian deaths
- Temporary site: Santa Monica Sears building (reported)
The welcome was designed to feel like a homecoming rather than a reopening. The school planned for the band to play, with student ambassadors and faculty members positioned to greet incoming students and help guide them through the first-day rhythm back on familiar ground.
Videos shared by the school showed community members crowding the streets, cheering and holding signs as students walked in. For families who spent months commuting to a temporary site and adjusting to ever-shifting routines, the scene offered something rare in recovery: a moment that looked and sounded like normal life returning.

In a letter to the school community, Executive Director Dr. Pam Magee framed the return as more than a logistical shift. She described it as a marker of unity and endurance after a year of upheaval, noting that many in the community may feel a mix of relief and grief as the campus reopens.
“After a year of resilience and adaptability, our school community will finally be back on our beloved Palisades campus… This return marks more than just a change of location — it’s a powerful reminder of our strength, unity, and commitment to learning.”
The Palisades Fire erupted on Jan. 7, 2025 and became one of the most destructive wildfire events to strike the Los Angeles area in recent memory. On the same day, the Eaton Fire broke out on the other side of the city, burning large areas of Altadena and adding to a devastating regional toll.
In the immediate aftermath of the fire, Palisades Charter High operated out of the Santa Monica Sears building, according to local reporting, while the campus faced rebuilding, repairs, and the practical reality of restoring a place that is equal parts classroom and community anchor.
“The past year challenged us in ways we never imagined,” Magee wrote, adding that the reopening is as much about spirit as it is about space. The return to campus, she said, is a celebration of what carried the school through: students showing up, staff adapting, and a neighborhood refusing to let a disaster be the final word.
