The Chicago Bears were forced into a late change on Sunday after wide receiver Rome Odunze was ruled out against the Cleveland Browns when he aggravated his foot injury during pregame warmups.
What happened before kickoff
Odunze was not originally listed among Chicago’s inactives, but the team later announced he would not play. The timing made it a particularly disruptive scratch, because it came after he had been preparing as though he would be available.
A foot and heel issue that’s lingered since October
Odunze had been questionable after missing last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers and was limited throughout practice this week. The underlying concern has been a nagging foot/heel problem that first appeared on Chicago’s injury report in October.
The receiver has previously indicated the issue isn’t a “simple fix,” and the Bears’ staff has been monitoring it closely. Last week’s game marked the first time he had missed a game in his career.
Why Odunze’s absence matters for the Bears
Even as a rookie, Odunze has become a central part of Chicago’s offense. He currently leads the Bears with 44 catches, 661 receiving yards, and six touchdowns this season.
With Odunze out, Chicago’s passing game loses a reliable target who can win contested looks and finish drives. It also puts more pressure on the remaining receivers and the scheme to create separation and sustain possession through shorter, higher-percentage throws.
What to watch next
The key question now is whether this is simply a short-term flare-up or a setback that requires additional rest. Foot and heel injuries can be stubborn, especially when they’re repeatedly aggravated, so Chicago may take a cautious approach moving forward.
