Authorities say 40 people were killed after becoming trapped inside a crowded bar in Crans-Montana as investigators examine safety standards and the suspected cause.
Swiss authorities have identified the first four victims of the New Year’s Eve fire that swept through a packed bar at the Crans-Montana ski resort, as families endured an agonising wait for news and forensic teams continued work at the scene.
Police in Valais canton said the bodies of a 16-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman—all Swiss citizens—have been formally identified and returned to their families, while efforts to identify other victims remain under way.
The blaze tore through Le Constellation, a popular après-ski venue, shortly after midnight as revellers gathered to welcome in 2026. Officials have said at least 40 people died and 119 were injured, with many suffering serious burns and smoke inhalation.
Investigators believe the fire may have started when sparkler-style candles mounted on champagne bottles were held too close to the ceiling, igniting materials overhead and triggering a fast-moving blaze. Early reporting from Reuters and the Guardian described concerns around flammable insulation or acoustic panels and how quickly flames spread across the ceiling.
Survivors have described confusion and panic as smoke thickened and visibility dropped. Officials are now examining whether the venue was overcrowded, how exits were managed, and whether the interior materials met fire safety requirements.
Investigation turns to safety standards
Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation to establish the precise cause of the fire and assess potential negligence. Authorities have said the identification process is likely to take time because many victims suffered severe burns, complicating visual recognition.
Several of the injured were transferred to specialist burn units outside Switzerland, including facilities in neighbouring countries, as hospitals across the region dealt with the scale of the emergency response.
The bar’s owners have denied breaking safety rules, but officials stressed that no conclusions will be drawn until forensic examinations and witness interviews are complete.
A resort in mourning
In Crans-Montana, floral tributes and candles have appeared near the sealed-off venue as residents and tourists try to process a night of celebration that turned into disaster. Local authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators space to complete their work.
Police said further updates will be provided as additional victims are identified and as investigators confirm what triggered the blaze and how it spread so rapidly.
Editor’s note: Details may change as Swiss authorities continue victim identification and release confirmed findings.
