A changing weather forecast has led to a mixed schedule for schools across several parts of Quebec, with some institutions remaining open while others decided to close for the day.
Local education authorities reviewed the latest weather conditions early in the morning before announcing their decisions, resulting in different outcomes depending on the district.
Several School Service Centres Remain Open
In the Estrie region, multiple school service centres confirmed that classes would continue as scheduled.
The Région-de-Sherbrooke, Hauts-Cantons, Sommets, and Val-des-Cerfs school service centres all announced that their schools would open normally and that students were expected to attend classes as usual.
These decisions were made after reviewing the latest forecasts and determining that the conditions would not significantly disrupt daily operations or transportation in those areas.
Eastern Townships School Board Announces Closures
The situation is different for the Eastern Townships School Board, which decided to close all of its schools and daycare services for the day.
School transportation in that network has also been cancelled. Officials said the precautionary measure was taken in response to expected weather conditions and to ensure student safety.
The closure affects schools and childcare services operating under the English-language board across the region.
Closures Also Reported in Centre-du-Québec
In the neighbouring Centre-du-Québec region, several school service centres also adjusted their schedules.
The Centre de service scolaire des Chênes announced the closure of its schools and daycare services for the day. However, Saint-Pie-X school remains open despite the broader shutdown.
Meanwhile, the Centre de service scolaire des Bois-Francs decided to close its schools but keep daycare services operating.
Private Schools Continue Operations
Unlike some public school networks, several private schools confirmed they would remain open.
Among the institutions welcoming students today are:
- Collège du Mont Notre-Dame
- Séminaire de Sherbrooke
- Collège Rivier
- École secondaire Bromptonville
These schools determined that their operations could continue safely despite the weather conditions affecting other districts.
Freezing Rain Forecast Less Severe Than Other Regions
Weather forecasts had raised concerns earlier about the possibility of freezing rain in the region. However, conditions in the Eastern Townships appear to be less severe compared with forecasts issued for other parts of Quebec.
Authorities continue to monitor weather developments as conditions may still change throughout the day.
For families and students, the result is a patchwork schedule across the region, with school operations depending largely on local decisions by each service centre or school board.
