Ottawa High-Rise Fire Kills 2, Injures 2 After 19th-Floor Blaze on Somerset Street

Two people dead after late-night high-rise fire in downtown Ottawa

A late-night high-rise fire in downtown Ottawa on Saturday turned deadly, leaving two people dead and two others injured after flames broke out on the 19th floor of a residential building on Somerset Street West.

According to Ottawa Fire Services, crews were called to the building at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after reports of a fire inside a residential unit. When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were already visible through a balcony door on the 19th floor, indicating the fire had grown rapidly before emergency crews reached the scene.

Paramedics later confirmed the address of the incident as 395 Somerset Street West. The fire quickly triggered a large emergency response as firefighters worked to contain the blaze while paramedics treated multiple victims.

One person pronounced dead at scene, another dies later in hospital

Paramedics confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire. Another victim who was transported to hospital in critical condition later died from their injuries.

Two additional people were also taken to hospital following the incident. One of those patients remains in critical condition, while the other sustained minor injuries.

Emergency officials also said a fifth person was assessed by paramedics at the scene but did not require transportation to hospital.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and authorities have not provided further details about their ages or how they may have been affected during the fire.

Firefighters contained blaze shortly after arrival

Ottawa Fire Services said crews managed to bring the fire under control by 10:03 p.m., just over half an hour after the initial call for help. Officials said the blaze was contained to the area of origin, preventing it from spreading further through the building.

Containing a fire inside a high-rise building can be particularly challenging because of the number of residents, vertical access issues, and the risk of smoke spreading through hallways, ventilation systems, and stairwells. Quick containment is often critical in preventing fires from affecting additional floors or neighbouring units.

Despite the rapid response and containment, the fire resulted in tragic consequences for several people inside the building.

Fire broke out on 19th floor of Somerset Street residential tower

The fire occurred inside a residential high-rise located in Ottawa’s downtown core on Somerset Street West, an area known for its dense housing and busy urban environment. Fires in high-rise buildings often require coordinated emergency responses because evacuations and rescues must be carried out across multiple floors.

Residents in high-rise buildings typically rely on fire alarms, sprinklers, fire doors and evacuation protocols to protect occupants during emergencies. When fires break out on higher floors, firefighters must work quickly to both control the flames and ensure residents can evacuate safely.

Officials did not say how many units were affected or whether residents from nearby floors had to be evacuated during the response.

Investigation underway into cause of deadly blaze

Authorities said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators will examine the damaged area, building systems, and other possible factors to determine how the blaze started.

Investigations into high-rise fires often include reviewing electrical systems, appliances, smoking materials, and other possible ignition sources, as well as determining how quickly smoke and flames spread within the building.

Officials have not yet indicated whether the fire is believed to be accidental or if any other factors may have contributed to the incident.

Ottawa Fire Services said more information may be released once investigators complete their initial review of the scene.

Community shaken as investigation continues

The deadly incident has shaken residents in downtown Ottawa, particularly those living in high-rise apartment buildings similar to the Somerset Street tower.

High-rise fires can be especially dangerous due to the speed at which smoke can travel and the challenges residents may face when evacuating from upper floors. Emergency officials frequently remind residents to maintain working smoke alarms, know evacuation routes, and respond quickly when fire alarms sound.

Authorities continue to investigate the deadly fire as the community mourns the victims and awaits answers about how the tragic incident unfolded.
