DC Traffic Disruptions Surge as Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon Triggers Major Road Closures

Washington, DC is seeing widespread traffic disruption today as thousands of runners take part in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon and 5K, with major roads across the city closed for extended hours. Drivers have been advised to expect delays throughout the day, with several closures remaining in place until 6:00 p.m..

The popular annual race, which brings large crowds and participants from across the country, began early Saturday morning. The 5K kicked off at 7:30 a.m., followed by the half marathon at 8:00 a.m., turning large parts of the capital into a pedestrian-only zone for much of the day.

City officials have urged residents and visitors to stay alert while traveling, follow police guidance, and plan alternate routes wherever possible.

Widespread closures across central Washington

Several major roads in central Washington were closed beginning Friday evening, including key sections of Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue. These closures are expected to remain active through Saturday evening, significantly impacting vehicle movement near key landmarks.

Additional closures rolled out early Saturday morning, with stretches of Constitution Avenue between 9th Street and 15th Street NW shut down from 3:00 a.m. to noon. As race activity intensified, further closures expanded across multiple streets between 6:00 a.m. and midday.

The affected network spans across downtown corridors, residential areas, and major connecting routes, including sections of 10th, 12th, 14th, 18th, 19th, and 27th Streets NW, along with Virginia Avenue, E Street, I Street, Columbia Road, and North Capitol Street.

Officials confirmed that these closures are necessary to ensure runner safety and manage the scale of the event, which attracts thousands of participants annually.

Parking restrictions add to commuter challenges

Alongside road closures, strict parking restrictions have been enforced across multiple zones since Friday. These restrictions extend through Saturday afternoon, limiting access to curbside parking across large sections of the city.

Key routes impacted include parts of Constitution Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, Madison Drive, and 3rd and 4th Streets NW. Vehicles parked in restricted zones risk being ticketed or towed as enforcement remains active throughout the event.

The combined effect of closures and parking limitations has significantly reduced road capacity, making travel through central Washington especially difficult.

Large-scale event transforms the city for the day

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon is one of the city’s most anticipated running events, blending fitness with live entertainment and community participation. The race route passes through iconic parts of Washington, creating a unique experience for runners while temporarily reshaping the city’s traffic patterns.

Authorities have emphasized that while disruptions are unavoidable, they are temporary and part of hosting large-scale public events safely. Traffic conditions are expected to gradually return to normal later in the evening once all race-related activities conclude.

For live traffic updates and official guidance, commuters can check the Metropolitan Police Department’s official updates before heading out.
