London Apartment Fire Leaves 9 Hospitalized Including Infant as Several Remain Critical

A fast-moving fire at a London, Ontario apartment tower early Saturday left several people hurt and forced emergency crews into multiple rescues as heavy smoke and flames tore through part of the building.

The blaze broke out around 6:30 a.m. on the sixth floor of 241 Simcoe Street, according to first responders. Fire crews arriving at the scene were met by intense fire conditions and thick smoke, with residents needing urgent help to get out safely. By late morning, officials said nine people had been taken to hospital, including an infant. Of those injured, five were reported in critical condition, while four were in stable condition.

The scale of the emergency quickly turned the high-rise into an active rescue scene. Firefighters worked floor by floor while paramedics treated the injured outside. The incident also triggered support for residents who could not immediately return to their homes, with city emergency staff moving to set up a reception centre for evacuees displaced by the fire.

Heavy smoke, multiple rescues and a second fire

What made the situation especially serious was the condition crews found on arrival. Officials said the first team at the scene encountered heavy fire and smoke, a sign that the blaze had already intensified by the time emergency responders reached the building. In high-rise fires, smoke can be as dangerous as the flames themselves, particularly when hallways and upper floors become difficult to clear.

Later in the morning, firefighters were also called to a second fire on a second-floor balcony. Authorities said that blaze was under control and appeared to be unrelated to the main sixth-floor fire. Even so, the added incident increased concern among residents already shaken by the first emergency.

Key facts at a glance:

Critical injuries: 5 people
Stable condition: 4 people, including an infant

Investigation now underway at 241 Simcoe Street

Investigators remained at the building after the flames were knocked down, and the cause of the fire had not yet been confirmed. The London Fire Department said the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office had been asked to assist, an indication of the seriousness of the incident and the need for a formal review of what happened inside the tower.

Officials also said building management was working with firefighters to establish a fire watch, a temporary safety measure used when a property needs continuous monitoring after a serious incident. That step is often taken when residents cannot fully reoccupy a building right away or when fire protection systems need to be assessed before normal access can resume.

For people living in the building, the focus now shifts from the shock of the morning rescue to immediate questions about safety, temporary shelter and when it may be possible to return. For London authorities, the next phase will depend on what investigators find as they examine the sixth-floor origin point and piece together the events that left so many injured in one of the city’s most serious apartment fires in recent months.
