Toyota has issued an urgent recall for 13,390 HiLux vehicles in Australia after identifying a fault linked to genuine accessory bullbars and nudge bars that could cause a sudden loss of power steering assistance, putting renewed focus on the safety of one of the country’s most widely used utes.
The recall covers 2025 and 2026 Toyota HiLux models built between August 28, 2025 and February 24, 2026. Toyota said all model grades are affected, including both 4×2 and 4×4 variants, where a Toyota Genuine Accessory bullbar or nudge bar with light bar was fitted.
According to the company, the wiring harness may have been incorrectly installed during the accessory fitment process. That fault can compromise the earth connection to the electronic power steering module, potentially causing the system to become inoperative while the vehicle is being driven.
What makes the recall more serious is the lack of warning. Toyota said drivers of affected vehicles are unlikely to see warning lights or experience earlier symptoms before the failure occurs. If the connection fails, steering can instantly become much heavier, a change that could sharply raise the risk of losing control in traffic, while cornering, or during emergency manoeuvres.
Australia’s vehicle recall authorities have warned that the defect could increase the risk of serious injury or death if it is not fixed. That language is notable, and it reflects the importance of power steering in modern vehicles, especially in larger utes frequently used for work, towing and long-distance driving.
Why this recall matters
The HiLux is more than a popular model in Australia. It is a core part of Toyota’s standing in the local market and a fixture on city streets, job sites and regional roads. A recall affecting more than 13,000 vehicles therefore lands as a broader consumer safety story rather than a niche technical issue.
The fault also highlights a growing pressure point in the modern car industry: the interaction between increasingly complex vehicle electronics and dealer-installed or factory-approved accessories. In this case, the underlying issue is not simply a component failure from the production line, but an installation problem involving equipment many buyers would reasonably assume was fully integrated into the vehicle’s safety systems.
That matters because accessories such as bullbars and light bars are especially common on utes sold in Australia. For many buyers, they are not cosmetic extras but practical additions for regional travel, site work and fleet use. When a fault emerges in that part of the ownership chain, it raises fresh questions about fitment standards, inspection processes and how rigorously electrical systems are checked after accessory installation.
What owners should do now
Toyota said it will contact affected owners directly and ask them to book their vehicle into a dealership for an inspection free of charge. If a fault is found, the repair will also be carried out at no cost to the customer.
Owners do not need to wait for a letter if they believe their vehicle may be involved. Toyota has published a VIN list for affected vehicles, and drivers can also use the Australian government’s vehicle recalls website to verify recall information and next steps.
The company has also advised owners to contact its Recall Assist Helpline on 1800 987 366 for further support. The line is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm AEST.
For Toyota, the immediate priority is to move quickly through inspections and repairs. For owners, the message is more urgent: this is a defect that may not announce itself before it happens, and in a vehicle as heavily relied on as the HiLux, that makes early action far more important than routine recall notices usually suggest.
