A devastating road tragedy on the N1 near Bela-Bela in Limpopo has left three members of one family dead after two separate crashes unfolded on the same highway, one of them involving the official vehicle of South Africaās Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi.
The South African Police Service confirmed that the incident involving the ministerās state vehicle happened on Saturday, 9 May 2026. The vehicle was being driven by a member of the Protection Security Services, the unit responsible for transporting and protecting senior government officials.
According to police, the tragedy began with an earlier crash on the N1 in which a man was allegedly struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer. He died at the scene.
Moments later, his wife reportedly tried to cross the highway with her two children to reach the area where the first accident had taken place. One of the children was strapped to her back when the second collision occurred.
Police said the woman and the baby were hit by the official vehicle carrying Minister Motsoaledi. Both sustained fatal injuries and died following the crash. The second child survived, although authorities have not yet released details about the childās condition.
The case has drawn national attention not only because a cabinet ministerās official vehicle was involved, but also because of the deeply tragic chain of events. A husband was killed in one crash, before his wife and baby died while reportedly trying to reach him on the same stretch of road.
What police have confirmed so far
SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Minister Motsoaledi, his close protection officer and the driver stopped immediately after the collision. They remained at the scene until police and emergency medical services arrived.
Police said statements were taken from people present at the scene as part of the investigation.
Authorities have opened two separate culpable homicide cases. One relates to the death of the husband, while the other relates to the crash involving the ministerās official vehicle that killed the woman and baby.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has taken over the matter because both drivers involved in the crashes are members of SAPS. IPID is expected to examine the conduct of the officers, the sequence of events, and whether negligence played any role in either collision.
The official report was also covered by TimesLIVE, which cited police confirmation of the fatal incidents and the IPID investigation.
At this stage, police have not announced any arrests. Investigators are expected to review witness accounts, road conditions, vehicle speed, visibility, and the exact positions of the victims and vehicles before reaching any conclusion.
The crash has also renewed attention on the dangers pedestrians face on South Africaās high-speed roads. Highways such as the N1 carry heavy traffic, including trucks, private vehicles and official convoys. When people attempt to cross these roads, especially during moments of panic or emergency, the risk of a fatal collision becomes extremely high.

For the affected family, the incident is an unimaginable loss. What began as one fatal accident quickly turned into a wider tragedy that claimed the lives of a father, mother and baby. The surviving child is now at the centre of public concern as authorities continue to withhold further medical details.
Cases involving official government vehicles often attract close public scrutiny because drivers assigned to ministers are expected to follow strict safety protocols. While Minister Motsoaledi was travelling in the vehicle, police have not said that he was driving. The vehicle was being operated by a Protection Security Services driver.

SAPS has extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing the loss as tragic. The final outcome will depend on IPIDās investigation into both crashes.
For now, the incident remains one of the most heartbreaking road tragedies reported in Limpopo this week, with police working to establish how two fatal accidents involving police-linked drivers occurred on the same stretch of highway within such a short period.
