A Friday morning school run in Marlborough, New Hampshire, turned fatal after a pickup truck and a school bus collided on Route 12, leaving the pickup driver dead and sending students to the hospital for medical checks.
The crash happened at about 7:15 a.m. near Webb Depot Road, according to reports citing New Hampshire State Police. The school bus was carrying 13 students from Monadnock Regional Middle-High School when the collision occurred. Officials said no students suffered serious injuries, but they were evaluated at the scene and later taken to Cheshire Medical Center for assessment and treatment of minor injuries.
The pickup truck driver was killed in the crash. Authorities had not immediately released the driver’s name as police continued their investigation and family notifications were pending.
Superintendent Jeremy Rathbun confirmed that the bus involved was the Fitzwilliam bus route for Monadnock Regional School District. In a statement shared after the crash, Rathbun said the students were checked by emergency personnel and found to be safe and stable before being transported for further evaluation.
“The students were evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene and were determined to be safe and in stable condition,” Rathbun said, according to WMUR. “They were then transported to Cheshire Medical Center to be assessed and treated for minor injuries.”
The school bus driver was also injured, though officials said those injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Emergency Crews Declared Mass Casualty Incident
The response quickly grew beyond a routine crash call because of the number of people involved. Firefighters declared a mass casualty incident, a term used when multiple patients need evaluation and emergency agencies must coordinate extra medical support.
That declaration brought ambulances and responders from several nearby communities, including Walpole, Winchester, Peterborough, Jaffrey and Golden Cross. About a dozen people connected to the bus were assessed and treated for minor injuries, with some transported to Cheshire Medical Center for additional care.
For parents, the most important update from school officials was that the students were safe and no serious student injuries had been reported. Still, the crash caused significant concern across the district because it happened during the morning commute while children were on their way to school.
Photos from the scene showed heavy damage to the front of the school bus and severe damage to the pickup truck. The impact left debris across the roadway and required an extended closure while emergency crews worked and investigators examined the crash site.
Route 12 near Webb Depot Road was expected to remain closed for several hours Friday morning. Police urged drivers to avoid the area as New Hampshire State Police continued working to determine how the collision happened.
Investigators had not immediately said whether speed, road conditions, visibility, vehicle movement or another factor may have contributed to the fatal crash. Crash reconstruction teams typically review vehicle positions, roadway evidence, witness accounts and damage patterns before releasing more detailed findings.
The Monadnock Regional School District said parents of the affected students were being contacted directly. That type of direct communication is critical in school transportation crashes, especially when early reports spread quickly and families are trying to confirm whether their children were involved.

Although the students escaped serious injuries, the crash remains a deadly incident because of the pickup driver’s death. The investigation will likely focus on the moments before impact, including where each vehicle was traveling, whether either driver attempted to brake or swerve, and what conditions existed on Route 12 at the time.
School bus crashes often bring a larger emergency response than a typical two-vehicle collision because every student must be accounted for and medically checked. Even when injuries appear minor, responders usually evaluate children for shock, pain, head injuries or delayed symptoms after a violent impact.
The Marlborough crash also created major traffic disruption in the area. Route 12 is an important road through southwestern New Hampshire, and a closure near Webb Depot Road can affect commuters, school traffic and local residents traveling between nearby communities.
State Police have not announced charges or citations. At this stage, officials have only confirmed the fatality, the number of students on board, the hospital evaluations and the continued investigation.
The crash left the Monadnock school community shaken. What began as a normal Friday morning bus route ended with a fatal collision, a large emergency response and families waiting for updates from school and medical officials.

New Hampshire State Police continue to investigate the deadly Marlborough crash. More information is expected after investigators complete their review and authorities release additional details about the pickup driver and the cause of the collision.
