Kaiapoi High School Lockdown After “Violent” Student Incident Sends One to Hospital

Kaiapoi High School in Canterbury, New Zealand, was placed into emergency lockdown on Monday afternoon after a student reportedly began acting violently and erratically on school grounds, prompting a major response from police and emergency services.

The incident unfolded during second break at the school, with parents receiving an urgent message around 2.15pm confirming the campus had entered lockdown procedures. School officials said the move was made to protect students and staff while emergency services dealt with the situation.

According to Acting Principal Nathan Sandes, the lockdown was triggered after “an incident involving a student acting violently and erratically on the back field at second break.”

“It was deemed necessary to put the school in lockdown to keep our students safe and out of harm’s way,” Sandes said in a message sent to families.

Police and ambulance called to Kaiapoi High School

Canterbury police confirmed officers were called to the school at about 2.10pm following reports of disorder. Senior Sergeant Hamish Keer-Keer said the school initiated its lockdown according to emergency protocols while police assessed the situation.

One person was later transported to hospital by ambulance for medical assessment. Police have not publicly identified the individual or confirmed the exact cause of the behaviour.

Local outlet RNZ reported that emergency services were able to bring the situation under control before the lockdown was lifted shortly after 3pm.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed officers had left the scene once the incident was resolved.

Students praised after tense lockdown

Students remained inside classrooms during the lockdown while teachers followed safety procedures. Sandes praised students for staying calm during what many described as a frightening situation.

“Our students responded positively and followed directions of our teachers. We are very proud of them for taking this incident seriously,” he said.

Some students later told local media the student involved appeared intoxicated and allegedly became physically aggressive toward staff after teachers approached her following concerns raised by other students.

Despite the alarming situation, the school confirmed all staff and students were safe once the lockdown ended.

The incident quickly gained attention across New Zealand, with online searches for Kaiapoi High School surging as parents looked for updates. School lockdowns are increasingly treated seriously by authorities, with campuses following strict procedures designed to minimise risk during unpredictable incidents.
