Arsenalâs Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain has become more than a football story for UK viewers. It has also turned into a question of access, cost and where supporters can legally watch one of the biggest matches of the season without paying extra.
The final, played at the PuskĂĄs ArĂŠna in Budapest on Saturday, May 30, is not being shown on traditional free-to-air television in the UK. That is the major change. For more than three decades, since the European Cup was rebranded as the Champions League in 1992, the final had always been available to UK viewers without a premium sports subscription. ITV carried it for years, and BT Sport, later TNT Sports, continued that habit through free streaming options.
This year, TNT Sports has chosen a different route. The Arsenal vs PSG final is available through TNT Sports platforms and HBO Max, meaning most fans need an active subscription to watch the match. HBO Max access starts from ÂŁ4.99, while full TNT Sports access through TV providers can cost considerably more depending on the package.
There is, however, one important exception. Virgin Media TV customers can watch the Champions League final at no extra cost through a dedicated TNT Sports Finals HD pop-up channel. The special channel is available on channel 526, giving existing Virgin Media subscribers a legal way to watch Arsenal take on PSG without buying a separate TNT Sports or HBO Max subscription.
That does not make the final free-to-air for everyone. It only means Virgin Media TV subscribers have been given access as part of their existing package. Viewers who are not already Virgin Media TV customers still need to use TNT Sports, HBO Max, Sky, Virgin Media, BT or another platform carrying the match.
The difference matters because many fans searching for âfree to watchâ may assume the final is available on a public broadcaster such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5. It is not. The free option applies only to eligible Virgin Media TV customers, while existing TNT Sports subscribers can continue to watch on TNT Sports 1.
The decision has caused frustration because the Champions League final is one of footballâs biggest annual events. Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised the move and argued that a match of this scale should remain available to supporters across the country, not just those able to pay for another subscription. His comments reflected a wider concern among fans that major sporting moments are increasingly moving behind paid platforms.
TNT Sports has defended its approach by pointing to the lower-cost HBO Max option. The broadcaster said fans could access UEFA finals coverage from ÂŁ4.99, calling it strong value compared with full sports subscriptions. The same arrangement also applied to the other UEFA finals this season, including Aston Villaâs Europa League final and Crystal Palaceâs Conference League final.
On the pitch, Arsenal are chasing a piece of history that has never been achieved by the club. Mikel Artetaâs side are appearing in only their second Champions League final and their first since 2006. A win over PSG would give Arsenal their first European Cup and complete one of the most important nights in the clubâs modern era.
PSG arrive with their own pressure and pedigree. The French champions are standing between Arsenal and the trophy that has escaped generations of Gunners teams. For neutral viewers, the final offers a heavyweight meeting between one of Englandâs most followed clubs and one of Europeâs most powerful modern sides.

The broadcast issue also adds another layer to Arsenalâs European run. Earlier in the season, Swikblog looked at how Arsenalâs Champions League draw gave them a clear route toward Budapest. That path has now delivered a final, but many UK supporters are discovering that watching the last step is not as straightforward as in previous years.
For viewers trying to work out the simplest answer: Arsenal vs PSG is not available on normal free-to-air TV in the UK. Virgin Media TV customers can watch it at no extra cost on channel 526, while others need access through TNT Sports, HBO Max or another paid provider carrying the final.
