Buc-ee’s $275K Manager Salary: Is It Real, Who Qualifies and How to Apply?

Buc-ee’s is attracting national attention after a recruitment pay scale showed that general managers can earn between $200,000 and $275,000-plus a year, potentially without a four-year college degree. The figure has intensified debate about student debt, alternative career paths and the demands of managing one of America’s busiest travel centers.

The salary range is genuine and appears on the company’s careers page. However, it is not an entry-level offer. The ā€œno experience necessaryā€ wording seen on recruitment signs should not be interpreted as confirmation that an inexperienced applicant can immediately become a general manager.

Complete Buc-ee’s pay scale

The recruitment scale circulating online lists these hourly and annual rates:

  • Cashiers, gift staff, warehouse workers, maintenance employees and grocery stockers: starting at $20 an hour
  • Food-service employees and restroom crew: up to $25 an hour on the displayed scale
  • Team leads: $23 to $28 an hour
  • Department managers: approximately $33 an hour
  • Assistant food-service managers: approximately $37 an hour
  • Assistant general managers and gift managers: $125,000 or more annually
  • Food-service managers: $150,000 to $200,000 annually
  • General managers: $200,000 to $275,000-plus annually

These are advertised ranges, not guaranteed offers. Actual compensation can depend on the location, vacancy, experience and responsibilities. Candidates should verify the rate in the individual job posting.

Can applicants qualify without a degree?

Buc-ee’s presents a career ladder running from associate to team lead, department manager, assistant general manager and general manager. Its published career path does not place a four-year degree requirement beside those positions.

That does not mean management experience is unnecessary. A general manager must be capable of leading a large workforce and overseeing customer service, inventory, cash controls, food production, safety, maintenance and cleanliness. Specific qualifications can vary between vacancies.

Why is the manager salary so high?

Buc-ee’s locations are much larger and busier than conventional convenience stores. A travel center can combine extensive fuel operations, prepared-food counters, grocery aisles, merchandise departments, warehouse functions and large restroom facilities.

The chain is known for brisket sandwiches, beef jerky, Beaver Nuggets, Beaver Tots, clean restrooms and its beaver mascot. Many stores have become roadside destinations rather than quick fuel stops.

General managers are responsible for keeping these high-volume operations running while maintaining the standards associated with the brand. The salary reflects that scale and accountability, not the duties of managing a small neighborhood gas station.

Benefits and working conditions

Buc-ee’s advertises medical, dental and vision insurance, paid time off and a 401(k) with an employer match of up to 6%. Employees are paid weekly, and hourly workers receive double pay on major holidays.

The widely circulated sign additionally advertised three weeks of paid time off and an extra $2 an hour for overnight work. Eligibility may depend on the position and employment terms. Buc-ee’s says paid time off can be used, cashed out or rolled over.

Stores remain open on weekends and holidays, and employees should expect a fast-paced environment. Store workers must wear tan, khaki or black trousers with a solid red collared shirt. Visible tattoos, body piercings, tongue posts, unnatural hair colors, open-toed shoes and torn or faded clothing are prohibited under the published appearance policy.

Buc-ee’s conducts employment and criminal-history background checks and maintains a drug and alcohol testing policy. A minor past offense does not automatically disqualify someone; the company says the decision depends on the offense, when it occurred and the applicant’s subsequent history.

Who can apply?

The minimum employment age is 18 in most states where Buc-ee’s operates and 19 in Alabama. New hires must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States. The company participates in E-Verify.

How to apply

Candidates can search by position, category or location through the official Buc-ee’s careers page. Multiple jobs can be pursued, although applicants must complete one application at a time.

Management vacancies for new stores are normally posted about eight months before opening, while frontline positions generally appear approximately 90 days beforehand. Prospective applicants can identify future hiring markets in this guide to Buc-ee’s planned store openings through 2029.

Job seekers looking for shorter-term retail experience can compare the application process with Spirit Halloween’s 52,000 seasonal jobs.

The $275,000 figure represents the upper end of compensation for senior leadership, not a starting salary for every applicant. What Buc-ee’s does offer is a visible path from hourly employment into six-figure management, paired with demanding operational, scheduling and workplace standards.
