Marvel’s Wolverine reviews are in ahead of its September 15 PS5 launch, and Insomniac Games’ long-awaited superhero title is proving more divisive than its Spider-Man games. The game was sitting at 77 on Metacritic in a September 10 snapshot, with critics loving Logan’s brutal combat style, cinematic presentation and mutant story but disagreeing over repetition, stealth and overall gameplay depth.
Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay.

The score can still change as more reviews arrive. For players deciding whether to buy at launch, the bigger story is what Wolverine actually delivers: a roughly 13-to-14-hour, story-driven action game rather than another massive superhero open world.
Marvel’s Wolverine reviews are seriously split
Wolverine’s 77 Metacritic snapshot stands below Insomniac’s previous Marvel games. Marvel’s Spider-Man scored 87, Miles Morales 85 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reached 90.
IGN India gave Wolverine 6/10, praising its story, performances, gore and spectacle while criticizing repetitive encounters and limited mechanical depth. Other critics have been considerably more enthusiastic about its focused, cinematic approach.
That split makes the score less useful than understanding what kind of game Insomniac has actually made.
This is not Spider-Man with claws
Marvel’s Wolverine is not an open-world game. The official PlayStation listing describes it as a single-player, narrative-driven action adventure built for PS5.
The campaign takes Logan across locations including the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo and Madripoor. Reviews indicate a playtime of roughly 13 to 14 hours, although difficulty, exploration and optional activities will affect individual completion times.
Instead of filling a huge map with icons, Insomniac pushes players through cinematic fights, chases and set pieces at a relentless pace.
Logan’s mutant story goes bigger than expected
Wolverine exists in the same universe as Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, but mutants already have a history here.
Logan’s past with Team X becomes important as the story expands around the threat facing mutants. The cast includes Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Mystique, Omega Red and Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister.
Jean and Logan’s relationship becomes a major part of the campaign, while Wolverine’s fractured memories reveal pieces of his violent history. Liam McIntyre’s performance as Logan is among the elements attracting praise from reviewers.
Combat is fast, bloody and built around Rage
Wolverine plays exactly as aggressively as fans would expect. Combat revolves around claws, close-range attacks, positioning, parries and brutal finishers.
The Rage system rewards players for maintaining pressure during fights. Logan also unlocks Techniques and Adaptations that expand his abilities, while collectibles and optional activities contribute to progression.
Nightmare trials add combat, traversal and wave-based challenges outside the main path.
The game does not hold back on violence either. Bloody finishers, graphic injuries and Logan’s regenerative powers are central to the presentation, making this a substantially more brutal Marvel experience than Spider-Man.

Repetitive enemies could be Wolverine’s biggest weakness
The claws look spectacular, but several critics question whether there is enough variety behind them.
Some encounters reportedly rely too heavily on repeated basic attacks against durable enemies, while important abilities take time to unlock. Enemy variety is also limited compared with the game’s cinematic ambition.
Stealth appears less successful. Logan can stalk and ambush enemies, but going claws-out can often be the more straightforward option.
Boss battles are less frequent but grow dramatically in scale, eventually bringing Wolverine into fights involving towering Sentinels.
PS5 performance gives players several options
There is no PS4 version. Wolverine is built around PS5 and is also PS5 Pro Enhanced.
IGN India reports 30fps and 40fps high-resolution configurations alongside options designed for compatible 120Hz and VRR displays. Its reviewer encountered one crash during approximately 14 hours of gameplay but otherwise reported strong performance.
DualSense haptic feedback and controller audio are supported, while PlayStation also lists a substantial selection of accessibility features.
Price, release date and whether to buy at launch
Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PS5 and PS5 Pro. The Standard Edition costs ₹4,999 in India, with a Digital Deluxe Edition offering extra suits, claw cosmetics and Technique Points.
For players following other major 2026 releases, the latest Metroid Ravenous Switch 2 release details show how packed the single-player gaming calendar has become. Meanwhile, Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT developments highlight the wider changes happening around major console projects.
The 77 Metacritic score alone should not decide a purchase. Wolverine appears best suited to players who want a focused, violent and cinematic Logan adventure. Anyone expecting Spider-Man-sized exploration or deep combat customization should pay closer attention to the criticisms before spending full price.
