Announced on Thursday, October 8, 2026, the untitled project will follow a young Violet Ledger and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write, executive produce and serve as showrunners, while Tom Verica and Betsy Beers are also attached as executive producers.
The announcement arrives as Netflix prepares Bridgerton Season 5, but the streaming company has not confirmed the prequel’s cast, episode count or release date.
Netflix Confirms Violet and Edmund Bridgerton Prequel
Netflix revealed the project through a Lady Whistledown-inspired announcement featuring floral borders and the familiar style of the fictional Society Papers.
According to Netflix’s official prequel announcement, the limited series will explore Violet and Edmund’s romance before they became parents to eight children.
The project follows Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the 2023 prequel exploring Queen Charlotte’s relationship with King George.
Violet and Edmund Prequel Cast: Who Will Star?
Netflix has not announced the actors who will portray young Violet and Edmund. However, both characters have appeared in earlier productions.
Ruth Gemmell plays Violet in the main series, while Rupert Evans portrayed Edmund in Season 2 flashbacks.
Connie Jenkins-Greig previously played young Violet Ledger in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
Netflix has not confirmed whether any of these actors will return for the new limited series.
Violet and Edmund’s Love Story Explained
Violet and Edmund’s marriage shaped the Bridgerton family’s belief in romantic love, influencing how their children approach relationships.
The couple had eight children: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth.
Edmund died after suffering a fatal allergic reaction to a bee sting, a tragedy explored in Bridgerton Season 2. His death left Violet widowed while pregnant with Hyacinth and forced Anthony to inherit the family title.
The prequel will explore the couple’s earlier romance, offering insight into the relationship that influenced Violet’s hopes for her children’s marriages.
Netflix has not disclosed whether the story will include their first meeting, engagement or wedding.
Violet Bridgerton’s Story Began in Queen Charlotte
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story introduced audiences to Violet’s younger years, including her upbringing in the Ledger household.
Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed young Violet, while Keir Charles played her father, Lord Ledger.
The new prequel will expand that history by focusing on Violet’s relationship with Edmund rather than her childhood.

Shonda Rhimes Returns for New Bridgerton Series
Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will oversee the series as writers, showrunners and executive producers. Tom Verica and Betsy Beers will also executive produce.
The project reunites several creative figures associated with Queen Charlotte, maintaining continuity across Netflix’s expanding Bridgerton universe.
Bridgerton has also attracted recognition beyond streaming audiences, including a place among the 2026 National Television Awards nominations.
Bridgerton Prequel Release Date: Latest Update
Netflix has not announced a release date for the Violet and Edmund prequel as of October 8, 2026.
Filming dates, episode numbers and trailer plans also remain unconfirmed.
Although Queen Charlotte consisted of six episodes, Netflix has not said whether the new limited series will follow the same structure.
Any suggested 2027 or 2028 premiere date remains speculation until Netflix provides an official schedule.
Bridgerton Season 5 Continues With Francesca and Michaela
Meanwhile, Bridgerton Season 5 will focus on Francesca Stirling, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza.
The upcoming season will explore Francesca’s second chance at love following the death of her husband, John Stirling.
Netflix has announced a 2027 premiere window for Season 5 and renewed the main series for Season 6. The Violet and Edmund prequel is a separate production.
The streaming company is also extending other established franchises, including Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2, as it develops additional stories within familiar television universes.
Is the Violet and Edmund Prequel Based on Julia Quinn’s Books?
Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance novels, which primarily follow the eight Bridgerton siblings.
Quinn also wrote Violet in Bloom, a novella exploring Violet’s life and romance with Edmund.
However, Netflix has not confirmed whether the new prequel will directly adapt the novella or introduce an original storyline.
The official title, lead cast and premiere date remain the biggest unanswered questions surrounding Netflix’s newly announced Bridgerton series.
