The upcoming release of Yakuza Kiwami 3 and its companion title Dark Ties may be far more than a nostalgic remake. According to the head of , the project quietly signals where the Like a Dragon franchise is heading next.

In a new interview with Japanese gaming publication ,studio chief

“If you approach this game assuming it’s just a remake, you’ll be mistaken,” Yokoyama said. “It contains major hints about the future direction of the franchise.”

A Remake That Isn’t Really a Remake

While fans expected updated graphics and modernised controls, Dark Ties introduces an entirely new narrative perspective. Instead of following series hero Kazuma Kiryu, players will experience events through the eyes of antagonist Yoshitaka Mine, offering a darker and morally complex storyline.

This narrative shift suggests a future where the Like a Dragon universe may abandon its traditional hero-only lens in favour of multi-perspective storytelling — including characters once considered villains.

The Bigger Signal to Fans

The choice to give Mine a leading role has triggered intense speculation online. Many see it as a sign that future entries could experiment with morally grey protagonists, deeper psychological storytelling and even restructure the franchise’s timelines.

On gaming forums and social media, the reaction was immediate. “This feels like a trial run for the franchise’s future,” wrote one fan on Reddit. Another added, “They’re telling us the next era won’t look like the old one.”

What Happens Next?

While Yokoyama stopped short of revealing the studio’s long-term roadmap, he hinted that the new storyline was “extremely shocking” — a phrase that has only fueled fan theories.

Whether that means a new protagonist, timeline reboot, or darker storytelling approach remains unknown. But what’s clear is that the series is preparing to change — and Dark Ties is its first step.
