Charter Communications has completed its $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications, creating a much larger U.S. broadband, television and mobile business and beginning a transition that will bring Spectrum products to millions of Cox customers.
The deal closed on August 20, 2026. The combined company has roughly 37 million customer relationships across internet, video and wireless services, with the Spectrum footprint extending across 45 states. For Cox customers, however, the transition will happen gradually rather than through an overnight switch.

Do Cox customers need to do anything now?
No immediate action is required. Existing Cox customers can continue using their current services and equipment while Charter integrates the two businesses.
Current account information and automatic payments remain in place for now, meaning customers should not replace equipment, create a new account or change payment details simply because the acquisition has closed.
Spectrum products, pricing and branding are expected to begin appearing across former Cox markets in mid-September. Customers should watch official account notices for changes that specifically affect their service.
Will Cox internet plans, bills and equipment change?
Existing Cox plans and pricing are not being replaced immediately. As Spectrum packages become available, customers may have new options to consider, but the rollout does not mean every household automatically moves to a different plan in September.
Existing modems, routers and television equipment will also continue working for now. Some customers with older TV hardware may eventually need compatible equipment to use streaming features included with qualifying packages.
Anyone considering a Spectrum offer should compare the complete monthly cost, internet speed, equipment, television package and promotional terms with their existing Cox service.
Some Cox internet customers can get free mobile service
Charter is welcoming eligible Cox internet customers who do not currently subscribe to Cox Mobile with an offer of one free year of mobile service.
The promotion highlights the growing importance of wireless to Charter. Spectrum Mobile had 12.5 million lines as of June 30, 2026, after adding 1.7 million over the previous 12 months.
Mobile is increasingly being bundled with home broadband as cable operators compete with wireless carriers, fiber networks and satellite providers. The changing connectivity market can also be seen in the growing role of satellite internet services in communities that depend on alternative broadband connections.
Las Vegas Cox customers get the Dodgers channel
One change is already visible in Las Vegas. Spectrum SportsNet LA, which carries Los Angeles Dodgers programming, is now available to qualifying Cox television customers.
The network is available on channel 50 for Contour TV Preferred and Contour TV Ultimate subscribers. Previously, Las Vegas viewers had more limited options for receiving the regional Dodgers network, including DirecTV and Fubo packages.
Programming changes such as this show that customers could see practical benefits from Charter’s larger television distribution relationships even before the broader Spectrum transition is complete.
Cox becomes Spectrum for customers, but there is a branding twist
For consumers, Spectrum will increasingly become the visible brand. Former Cox markets will eventually see Spectrum Internet, Spectrum Mobile, Spectrum TV and other products.
At the corporate level, the direction is surprisingly reversed. Charter plans to change the parent company’s name to Cox Communications within one year. Headquarters will remain in Stamford, Connecticut, while the company will maintain a significant presence in Atlanta.
According to Charter’s official closing announcement, the company also plans to bring Cox customer-service functions currently performed overseas back to the United States within approximately 18 months.

The $34.5 billion deal is not an all-cash purchase
The headline $34.5 billion valuation does not mean Cox Enterprises received that amount entirely in cash. At closing, Cox received approximately $4 billion in cash, about $5 billion in common partnership units and $6 billion in convertible preferred units. Roughly $12 billion of Cox debt and finance leases also remains outstanding within Charter subsidiaries.
Cox Enterprises and its subsidiaries now hold approximately 26% of the combined company on an as-converted and as-exchanged basis. Cox Enterprises Chairman and CEO Alex Taylor has also become chairman of Charter’s board.
Charter also completed the Liberty Broadband transaction
Alongside the Cox acquisition, Charter completed its acquisition of Liberty Broadband, the company associated with longtime cable investor John Malone. Liberty Broadband is no longer a direct Charter shareholder and no longer designates directors for election to Charter’s board.
The transactions come as the traditional cable industry faces pressure from streaming, fiber broadband, fixed-wireless internet and satellite providers. That same disruption is prompting other operators to reconsider traditional television, including WOW!’s move away from its traditional cable TV service toward YouTube TV.
What Cox customers should know about the transition
Mid-September is the first major milestone, when Spectrum products and pricing are expected to begin launching in former Cox markets. The wider integration will take longer, with Charter planning to apply its sales, workforce and customer-service model over roughly 18 months.
Customers should continue using their current service unless they receive official instructions, compare Spectrum offers carefully before changing plans and verify unexpected requests for billing information through official Cox or Spectrum channels.
For millions of households, the real impact of the $34.5 billion deal will ultimately be measured through everyday details: internet prices and speeds, equipment, television channels, mobile offers and customer service as Cox markets gradually move into the Spectrum system.
