Elizabeth line passengers were hit by rush-hour disruption on Friday morning after a signal failure at Liverpool Street forced Transport for London to suspend trains between Whitechapel and Stratford.
The problem began during one of the busiest parts of the morning commute, leaving passengers facing severe delays across the rest of the Elizabeth line. The disruption affected journeys through several major London interchange points, including Liverpool Street, Paddington, Whitechapel and Stratford.
According to the Evening Standard, trains between Liverpool Street and Paddington were being cancelled or heavily delayed while TfL worked to repair the fault. The issue also disrupted routes between Shenfield and Paddington, Stratford or Gidea Park and Heathrow Terminal 4, and Abbey Wood to Maidenhead or Heathrow Terminal 5.
For many passengers, the timing made the delays more difficult. The Elizabeth line is now a key route for commuters travelling from east London and Essex into the City, the West End and Heathrow. A failure around Liverpool Street can quickly spread pressure across connecting Tube, bus and National Rail services because so many journeys depend on that central section.
TfL said tickets were being accepted by any reasonable route on the Underground, Great Western Railway, Greater Anglia services and London Buses. Passengers were advised to check the official TfL status page before travelling, especially if their route involved central London or airport connections.
The disruption came shortly after the Elizabeth line marked its third birthday, a reminder of how quickly the railway has become one of the capital’s most important transport links. While the line has changed cross-London travel for many passengers, Friday’s fault showed how a single signalling problem can cause wider disruption when services are tightly connected across London, Essex, Berkshire and Heathrow.
There was also separate disruption on the District and Hammersmith & City lines after a faulty train at Bromley-by-Bow caused severe delays. Minor delays were also shown on the Central line during the morning, adding further pressure for commuters looking for alternatives.
