Egg Recall: 1.6 Million Dozen Recalled—Check Brands and Codes

Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. has recalled 1,589,577 dozen—approximately 19.1 million—white shell and brown cage-free eggs produced in Texas because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. The egg recall affects selected Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Country Morning and Sunups products.

The voluntary recall was announced on July 22, 2026. No specific illnesses had been linked to the eggs when the notice was issued. However, affected cartons have sell-by or best-by dates through August 17 and may still be stored in consumers’ refrigerators.

Egg recall brands and packages

The recall does not include every egg sold under these brands. Consumers must match the package size, plant code and Julian date with the recall information.

• Kroger: Large 12-, 18- and 60-count; Extra Large 12-count; Medium 12- and 30-count; and Jumbo 12-count.
• Simple Truth Cage Free: Medium Brown 12-count and Large Brown 12-, 18- and 24-count.
• Brookshire’s: Large 6-, 12-, 18-, 36- and 60-count; Extra Large 18-count; and Jumbo 12-count.
• Country Morning: Large 12-count, 18-count and 2½-dozen; Extra Large 12-count; Medium 12-count; and Jumbo 12-count.
• Sunups: Medium 2½-dozen.

Selected bulk Grade AA Large, Grade A Large, Grade A Brown, Grade A Medium, Grade A Extra Large and Grade A Jumbo foodservice products are also included.

Plant codes, dates and UPCs to check

Recalled cartons carry plant code P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian date from 157 through 184. The FDA item table displays the second code as 840962. The identifying information is printed in date-coding ink on the left or right side of the carton.

The eggs were produced and distributed from Texas farms between June 6 and July 3, 2026. Affected packages have sell-by or best-by dates from July 20 through August 17, 2026.

Bulk foodservice products do not have listed consumer UPCs. Package photographs and the complete product table are available in the official FDA egg recall notice.

Where were the recalled eggs sold?

The products were shipped to foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Affected Kroger eggs were available in Texas and Louisiana.

Brookshire Grocery stores sold affected products in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi. Smaller retail outlets also received eggs, so shoppers should check cartons regardless of where they were purchased.

The potential contamination is separate from the earlier Ghirardelli, Zapp’s and Giant Eagle Salmonella recalls, which involved a recalled dry-milk ingredient rather than shell eggs.

How the contamination risk was discovered

Midwest Poultry Services identified the concern through environmental monitoring and root-cause analysis at two Texas farms. The company has stopped distributing fresh eggs from those locations. No other Midwest Poultry Services products are included in the recall.

Salmonella symptoms and health risks

Salmonella infection can cause fever, diarrhea that may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Young children, frail or older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious or potentially fatal infection.

In rare cases, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and cause arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis. Exact package checks are important because recalls may involve different hazards, as demonstrated by the Molly’s Kitchen pasta salad recall involving undeclared egg and milk.

What consumers should do

Consumers should not eat eggs matching the affected brand, package, code and date information. Return the product to its original place of purchase for a full refund.
