Google Pixel Watch 5 Launches at $399 With Gemini AI and Advanced Health Tracking

Google has launched the Pixel Watch 5 alongside the Pixel 11 series at its Made by Google event, bringing deeper Gemini integration, new Health Guardian tools, improved sleep and GPS tracking, 64GB of storage and slightly larger batteries. The smartwatch starts at $399 in the US, with sales beginning August 20 after preorders opened on August 12.

The familiar circular design has changed little, making this primarily a software, AI and health-focused upgrade. For Pixel Watch 4 owners, the biggest reasons to consider moving to the new generation are therefore found inside the watch rather than on its exterior.

Pixel Watch 5 price, sizes and availability

Google is offering 41mm and 45mm models with Wi-Fi and LTE options. The 41mm Wi-Fi version starts at $399, while its LTE counterpart costs $499. The 45mm versions start at $429 for Wi-Fi and $529 for LTE.

The 41mm model comes in Matte Black, Polished Silver, Champagne Gold and Satin Pyrite finishes, while the 45mm version is offered without the Champagne Gold option. Google is also introducing different band choices, including a Stephen Curry Special Edition band.

Gemini becomes more proactive on your wrist

Gemini Intelligence is central to the Pixel Watch 5 experience. Instead of only waiting for questions, Google’s assistant can proactively surface information and actions based on context.

If someone sends a message mentioning a restaurant, for example, Gemini can help bring up relevant information. Timely updates such as flight details and ETAs can also appear on the watch.

Users can raise their wrist to ask Gemini questions, find nearby places and start navigation. Voice commands for certain everyday actions, including timers, alarms and workouts, can also work offline.

The direction fits Google’s broader push to combine AI with wearable data. Its work around Gemini-powered Fitbit health coaching shows how the company increasingly sees AI as part of the everyday wearable experience rather than simply a phone-based assistant.

Health Guardian is the biggest health upgrade

Pixel Watch 5 introduces Health Guardian, a suite of proactive health tools designed to identify longer-term patterns. One feature tracks blood-pressure trends using sensor information and machine learning. Google says the underlying technology was tested against 24-hour blood-pressure monitors and uses a waveform model trained on more than one billion minutes of data from over 500,000 people.

Another feature looks for changes associated with insulin resistance by analyzing signals including sleep, heart rate and physical activity over time. Google plans to provide monthly summaries of blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends.

There is an important limitation: these features should not be confused with clinical measurements or diagnoses. Pixel Watch 5 does not replace a blood-pressure cuff or diabetes testing. Google’s official Pixel Watch 5 information provides further details on health-feature availability and restrictions.

Breathing Emergency Detection adds another safety feature. It looks for a persistent decline in oxygen saturation and can contact emergency services when the system identifies a potential breathing emergency and the wearer is unresponsive. The feature is initially launching in select European countries.

Better sleep tracking and twice as accurate GPS

Google says sleep-stage tracking is now 15% more accurate. A new sleep breathing quality metric follows changes in blood oxygen during the night, while Smart Wake attempts to wake users at a more suitable point in their sleep cycle. A bedtime watch face is also designed to reduce nighttime distractions.

Fitness tracking receives a significant GPS upgrade. Google says route mapping is twice as accurate as previous generations, potentially producing better workout data in challenging environments where buildings and other obstacles can interfere with positioning.

Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, 64GB storage and bigger batteries

Pixel Watch 5 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform. Google says it delivers 12% more CPU performance and 50% more RAM, helping make the watch around 20% faster overall.

Storage doubles from 32GB on Pixel Watch 4 to 64GB. The round AMOLED display remains capable of reaching up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, while the watch ships with Wear OS 7.

The 41mm model has a 332mAh battery, compared with 325mAh previously, while the 45mm version increases from 455mAh to 465mAh. Google rates battery life at up to 30 hours for the 41mm watch and up to 40 hours for the larger model.

Connectivity includes Bluetooth 6, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, UWB and built-in GPS, while LTE versions add cellular connectivity. The watch also carries IP68 and 5ATM ratings for dust and water resistance.

Health hardware includes SpO2 monitoring, ECG, skin-temperature tracking, heart-rate monitoring and Loss of Pulse Detection alongside the new Health Guardian capabilities.

Is Pixel Watch 5 a meaningful upgrade?

Pixel Watch 5 is unlikely to tempt buyers because of a dramatically different appearance. Its case for upgrading rests on proactive Gemini assistance, improved health analysis, better GPS, more accurate sleep tracking, doubled storage and modest battery improvements.

Google’s wider hardware push is also important because the watch is designed to work increasingly closely with the company’s phones and AI services. Buyers interested in that ecosystem can follow the latest Google Pixel 11 coverage as the new devices arrive.

Before spending $399 or more, buyers should check regional availability for the specific Gemini and health features they want. That is particularly important for Health Guardian and emergency functions, where availability and eligibility can differ by country. For the Pixel Watch 5, those software capabilities may ultimately matter more than any specification on the box.
