London Tube Delays Today: Metropolitan and Windrush Lines Face Major Disruption

London commuters faced another difficult journey as disruption hit parts of the Tube and Overground network, with the Metropolitan line and Windrush line among the worst affected services during peak travel hours.

The Metropolitan line saw severe delays after overnight engineering work finished later than planned. The problem affected services across the route, with disruption reported between Harrow-on-the-Hill, Watford and Chesham, while earlier updates showed no service between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Aldgate.

The timing made the disruption more difficult for passengers. The Metropolitan line is one of London’s key commuter routes, carrying people from north-west London and surrounding areas into central stations such as Baker Street, King’s Cross St Pancras, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Aldgate.

When delays hit this route, the impact can spread quickly. Passengers travelling from areas including Harrow, Wembley Park, Finchley Road, Watford, Chesham and Amersham often depend on the line for direct access into central London. Any gap in service during rush hour can lead to longer waits, crowded platforms and pressure on nearby Tube, rail and bus routes.

Windrush line suspended between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays

The Windrush line also faced serious disruption after a signal fault at Denmark Hill. Services were stopped between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays while engineers worked to fix the issue.

That section is important for passengers travelling across south and east London. Clapham Junction is one of the busiest rail interchanges in the country, while Surrey Quays connects passengers towards Canada Water, Whitechapel and other Overground routes. A suspension between the two stations can force commuters into longer and less direct journeys.

Although TfL reported a good service on the rest of the Windrush line, the suspended section still created problems for anyone relying on the route for cross-London travel. Passengers were advised to check their journey before leaving and consider alternative routes where available.

Signal faults are treated seriously because they affect how trains are controlled and spaced on the network. Until engineers are satisfied that the equipment is working safely, services may be slowed, reduced or stopped completely. That can be frustrating for passengers, but safety checks are a necessary part of restoring normal operations.

Jubilee and Northern lines also affected

The disruption was not limited to the Metropolitan and Windrush lines. Earlier in the morning, the Jubilee line also suffered severe delays between Willesden Green and Stanmore, linked to the late finish of engineering work. Those delays were later cleared, but they added pressure to the network during the early part of the commute.

The Northern line later reported minor delays after a faulty train at Camden Town. While less severe than the Metropolitan line disruption, delays at Camden Town can still affect a large number of passengers because it is a busy interchange for north London and central London journeys.

Reports also mentioned wider transport disruption linked to a fire alert at Finsbury Park and a signal failure near Russell Square. Separately, the Suffragette line was affected by a faulty train at Walthamstow Queen’s Road, with passengers offered ticket acceptance on London Buses, the Elizabeth line, Great Northern and Weaver line services during the disruption.

For commuters, the biggest challenge was the number of problems happening across the network at the same time. A delay on one line is often manageable, but when several lines are affected, alternative routes can quickly become crowded or less reliable.

Passengers travelling through Harrow-on-the-Hill, Aldgate, Clapham Junction, Surrey Quays, Denmark Hill, Camden Town and Finsbury Park were among those most likely to face changes to their normal journeys.

TfL advised passengers to plan ahead and use live travel information before setting off. The official TfL Tube, DLR, Elizabeth line and Overground status page remains the most reliable place to check whether a line is running normally, delayed or partly suspended.

Commuters can also use TfL’s journey planner to compare alternative routes in real time. That is particularly useful during major disruption because the fastest route may change depending on whether nearby lines, buses or National Rail services are also affected.

For Metropolitan line passengers, possible alternatives may include parts of the Jubilee line, Chiltern Railways, the Elizabeth line, local bus services or other Underground connections, depending on the starting station. For Windrush line passengers, buses and National Rail services may help cover parts of the journey while the Clapham Junction to Surrey Quays section remains affected.

Passengers heading to work, school, hospital appointments or onward train services were urged to allow more time. During peak periods, even short delays can create crowding at interchange stations, especially when large numbers of passengers try to re-route at the same time.

The latest disruption comes as London passengers continue to face regular travel challenges from engineering works, signal faults, train failures and planned industrial action. Swikblog has also covered wider commuter concerns in its report on TfL Tube strike dates and travel impact.

For today, the clearest advice for London commuters is to check live updates before travelling, avoid relying on one route if possible and leave extra time for journeys involving the Metropolitan, Windrush, Jubilee or Northern lines.

Services may improve gradually as engineers complete repairs and trains are repositioned across the network, but passengers should continue checking conditions before their return journey, as disruption can change quickly throughout the day.
