God of War: Laufey Revealed as Faye Takes the Lead in Santa Monica Studio’s Next PS5 Game

God of War: Laufey is official, and Santa Monica Studio is taking one of the biggest creative risks in the franchise’s history. Rather than continuing the story through Kratos’ perspective, the studio is placing Faye at the center of the next mainline entry, giving players control of a character whose influence has shaped the modern saga from the very beginning.

The announcement arrived during Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, where PlayStation revealed several upcoming PS5 titles. Among all the announcements, God of War: Laufey stood out as one of the most surprising reveals, introducing a new protagonist while opening the door to an entirely different chapter for the long-running action-adventure series.

According to details shared on the official PlayStation Blog, the story begins after Faye’s funeral, an event that originally set the 2018 God of War journey in motion. Instead of finding peace in death, Faye awakens in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen. Described as the birthplace and final destination of all magic, the realm exists beyond the afterlives familiar to mortals and serves as a meeting point for gods, creatures and powerful beings from different mythologies.

Faye quickly discovers that the plans she carefully put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now under threat. Her mission becomes more than survival. She must uncover why the natural flow of magic has been disrupted while navigating a dangerous landscape where rival gods compete for power. The premise allows Santa Monica Studio to explore one of the most important yet least understood characters in the series, revealing the humanity, strengths and flaws behind the legendary Giant warrior.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the reveal is its mythology. Previous games focused heavily on Greek and Norse legends, but God of War: Laufey appears ready to expand beyond those boundaries. The reveal showcased encounters with Sekhmet, the Egyptian lion-headed goddess, and Begtse, a deity linked to Mongolian and Buddhist traditions. Their inclusion suggests the franchise is evolving into a broader mythological universe where gods from different cultures can exist and clash within the same world.

Combat has also undergone significant changes. Santa Monica Studio describes Faye’s fighting style as a combination of the speed and fluidity seen in the original Greek-era games and the cinematic combat systems introduced in the Norse saga. Unlike Kratos’ heavier and more deliberate approach, Faye is built around mobility, momentum and precision.

Her primary weapon is a legendary sword entrusted to her after arriving in the Everywhen. Designed around aggressive movement and rapid attacks, the blade allows Faye to transition seamlessly between ground and aerial combat. Gameplay footage revealed a faster combat rhythm that rewards maintaining pressure rather than relying on brute force.

The game’s most distinctive mechanic revolves around Faye’s connection to Giant magic. Known as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, she possesses powerful soul-manipulation abilities. Players can separate an enemy’s soul from its body, attack the soul directly, launch it into nearby enemies and create unique combo opportunities. The mechanic not only distinguishes her combat style from Kratos but also introduces a fresh strategic layer that could redefine how battles unfold throughout the adventure.

Faye will not travel alone. Joining her are two new companions who appear central to both gameplay and storytelling. Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, is a curious cosmic cube willing to do anything to protect his friends. Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau, serves as the guardian of the powerful sword that eventually becomes Faye’s weapon. Together they accompany her deeper into the Everywhen, where encounters with gods, monsters and entirely new beings await.

Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye following her appearance in God of War Ragnarök. Her return signals Santa Monica Studio’s commitment to exploring a character whose legacy has influenced nearly every major event in the Norse saga. Rather than simply telling stories about Faye through flashbacks and memories, the studio is finally giving players the chance to experience her journey firsthand.

God of War: Laufey is currently available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store and is in development exclusively for PlayStation 5. While Sony has yet to announce a release date, the reveal makes it clear that the future of God of War extends far beyond the Nine Realms. With a new protagonist, an ambitious setting and mythologies converging in ways never seen before, the franchise appears poised to enter its most expansive era yet.
