A holiday flight from Liverpool to Palma de Mallorca was forced to divert to Manchester Airport on Thursday after passengers felt an unusual vibration shortly after takeoff and the pilots declared a general emergency.
Jet2 flight LS3251, operated by Boeing 737-800 G-JZHX, departed Liverpool John Lennon Airport at approximately 8:00 a.m. BST. The aircraft landed safely in Manchester around an hour later, with no injuries reported.
The disruption affected travellers beginning their journey to Majorca during the busy summer season. Jet2 arranged a replacement plane to carry them onwards after the original aircraft was removed from service for inspection.
From takeoff in Liverpool to a safe landing in Manchester
LS3251 initially flew south from Liverpool before stopping its climb at around 15,000 feet. Approximately 11 minutes after departure, the aircraft changed direction near Shrewsbury and transmitted squawk code 7700.
One flight-tracking report placed the emergency declaration at approximately 12,875 feet, while other data showed the plane had previously levelled at around 15,000 feet. These figures can differ because they may refer to separate moments during the same event.
The aircraft first appeared to be returning to Liverpool. Instead of landing immediately, it entered a holding pattern north of the city at around 14,000 feet at approximately 8:32 a.m.
Holding gave the pilots time to work through safety procedures, communicate with air traffic control and assess the best airport for the diversion. By 8:36 a.m., information indicated that the flight would land at Manchester.
The Boeing 737 began its final approach at approximately 8:52 a.m. and touched down on Manchester’s runway 23L at around 9:01 a.m. Three airport fire vehicles were waiting near the runway as a precaution.
Jet2 attributed the diversion to “unforeseen operational reasons.” Engineers inspected G-JZHX after landing, and the aircraft taxied normally to the terminal at approximately 9:08 a.m. Passengers did not have to evacuate on the runway.
What passengers experienced and why 7700 was used
A passenger travelling with his wife, brother and sister-in-law said the aircraft began producing more noise and a noticeable vibration immediately after takeoff. The change was not severe enough to create panic, but those onboard sensed that something was different.
Around 15 minutes into the journey, the captain told passengers there was an issue and that the aircraft needed to land for checks. The passenger said the pilot believed the problem may have been caused by a bird strike.
Families and children were among those onboard. Passengers reportedly remained calm, while the cabin crew continued safety procedures and offered reassurance during the diversion.
A bird strike remains the leading reported explanation, but Jet2 had not publicly confirmed the final result of its technical inspection. It should therefore be described as suspected rather than established fact.
Squawk 7700 is an internationally recognised transponder code that tells air traffic controllers an aircraft has a general emergency. It gives the flight priority but does not identify the specific problem or mean that a crash is expected.
Technical faults, medical incidents and operational problems can all lead to the same code being selected. During the Gatwick disruption involving several 7700 alerts, aircraft used the emergency code while a runway problem forced diversions.
Manchester’s fire crews were positioned because the flight had declared an emergency, not because there was evidence of fire. Such deployments allow responders to act immediately if assistance is needed after landing.

A replacement aircraft continued the Palma journey
Jet2 organised another Boeing 737 rather than cancelling the passengers’ trip. Initial information indicated a replacement departure at around 11:25 a.m., while a later update listed 11:50 a.m.
The replacement aircraft, registered G-JZDD, was reportedly flown from London Stansted to Manchester. Passengers could then resume their journey to Palma after an unexpected airport change and several hours of delay.
Travellers should check the official Jet2 flight information service because revised times can change while airlines reposition an aircraft and crew.
Passengers should retain booking confirmations, boarding passes and receipts for reasonable expenses. Eligibility for assistance or compensation depends on the confirmed cause and the eventual arrival delay, rather than the emergency declaration alone.
Bird encounters are most common at lower altitudes during takeoff and landing. Even when an aircraft remains controllable, pilots may choose to land so engineers can examine its engines, wings, nose and fuselage before it carries passengers again.
No information released during the incident indicated visible damage, an onboard fire or injuries. The previous day’s LS3251, operated by another aircraft, had reportedly departed Liverpool more than three hours late, but there was no evidence linking that delay to Thursday’s emergency.
Aviation diversions can arise from very different circumstances. A separate Jet2 emergency landing in Portugal following a pilot medical incident required similar precautionary planning, although it was unrelated to LS3251.
Thursday’s incident ended with G-JZHX safely at Manchester, an engineering inspection underway and another aircraft arranged to carry the affected passengers to Majorca.
