World Meteorological day is the United Nations annual event, celebrated every year on March 23 to remember the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization on 23rd March 1920.
Every year this organization announces a slogan for the World Meteorological Day which is celebrated by all the countries. The day also highlights the contributions of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services made for the safety and well-being of the society.
World Meteorological Day 2023 Theme
This year the theme of World Meteorological Day 2023 is “The Future of Weather Climate and Water across Generations“
As a result of climate change, weather, temperature, and water extremes are becoming more common and intense in many places of the world. Many individuals are exposed to a variety of hazards than ever before, which are evolving as a result of population increase, urbanization, and environmental deterioration.
COVID-19 has worsened society’s problems and reduced coping mechanisms. The pandemic has also recognized the significance for a truly multi-hazard, cross-border approach to achieve global goals on climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development in our interconnected world.
Weather forecasts are no longer adequate. Impact-based predictions that tell people what the weather will do are critical for saving lives and livelihoods. Despite this, one out of every three people is still not effectively protected by early warning systems.
As a result, the theme of World Meteorological Day 2022 is Early Warning and Early Action, highlighting the critical role of hydro meteorological and climate information for disaster risk reduction.
Who is the World Meteorological Organization?
WMO is a United Nations (UN) specialized agency with 193 Member States and Territories. It is the voice of the UN system’s authority on the state and behavior of Earth’s atmosphere and also the interaction of land and oceans, the weather and climate which produces the resulting distribution of water resources. The World Meteorological Organization is originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), founded in 1873 with an aim to facilitate the exchange of weather condition information across the national borders.
