World Tourism Day is commemorated on September 27th each year and was first observed by UNWTO, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, in 1980. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the important role that tourism plays worldwide.
In particular the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of no poverty, gender equality, decent employment and economic growth, and reduction of inequalities (Goals 1 through 10) are recognized as pillars of the tourism industry.
Global tourism is being urged to aim for inclusivity and expansion by UNWTO, a specialized organization of the United Nations focusing on sustainable and responsible tourism. UNWTO makes sure that everyone involved in the sector—communities, youth, minorities, and those who might otherwise be overlooked—has a say in its advancement.

Theme of World Tourism Day 2024
This year the World Tourism Day will be celebrated with the theme- “Tourism and Peace”.
In honor of World Tourism Day, let us pause to consider the inextricable bond that exists between travel and harmony. Communities can be completely transformed by sustainable tourism, which boosts local economies, creates jobs, and encourages inclusivity.
It can ease tensions and promote peaceful coexistence by respecting and protecting cultural and natural heritage. Additionally, tourism can encourage collaboration and peaceful development by fostering economic interdependence among neighbors.

History
World Tourism Day was first observed in 1980, after the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) general assembly resolved in 1979 to create the annual event on September 27. The UNWTO chose September 27, 1970, to adopt Statutes, a day that is regarded as significant in the history of global tourism.
Goal of World Tourism Day
The primary aim of World Tourism Day is to raise awareness among global citizens regarding the significance of tourism in fortifying social, cultural, and economic values. The Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization stated on this World Tourism Day, “remember to respect nature, your culture, and your host wherever you travel.”
