As of May 8, 2025, tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following a series of events that have brought the two nuclear-armed neighbors to the brink of open conflict.
Pahalgam Terror Attack
On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 27 individuals, including 25 Hindu tourists, a Christian tourist, and a local Muslim resident. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups, a claim that Pakistan has denied.
After the Pahalgam terrorist attack India launched “Operation Sindoor “on the night of May 6-7, 2025. This operation involved coordinated missile and air strikes targeting nine locations within Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, aiming at infrastructure associated with groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Following India’s strikes, Pakistan reported shooting down recently on 8th May Pakistan launched a coordinated missile and drone attack targeting Indian military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur. After which India successfully intercepted and neutralized a series of Pakistani drone and missile attacks targeting military installations in Jammu, Udhampur, and Pathankot. The Indian Armed Forces reported that all incoming threats were effectively countered by air defense systems, resulting in no casualties or significant damage.
This assault followed India’s Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes on alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, conducted in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 27 lives.
Impact of War on Civilians
In India, security has been heightened across border states, with mock drills conducted in cities like Delhi and Lucknow. The government has also advised media platforms to suspend content originating from Pakistan. Meanwhile, civilians in border areas have been affected by cross-border shelling, leading to casualties and displacement in areas like Poonch and Rajouri.
