National Sports Day 2024 Theme

National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th of August which marks a birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. He is one of the all-time hockey legend and his contributions to the game and exceptional abilities have made a lasting impression on the history of sports in the country. Major Dhyan Chand who won the gold medal in the  Olympics for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936. The main aim of celebrating National Sports Day is to raise awareness about the importance of sports and daily activities in every individual life.

He achieved his pinnacle of success by making a mark on the international hockey arena and by playing for his nation on multiple occasions. He has legendary status in Indian and international hockey. On his birthday, National Sports Day is honored, and the highest prize in India for athletic and gaming accomplishments is the Dhyan Chand Trophy. As a guide, Major Dhyan Chand was familiar with Pankaj Gupta’s hockey game. Nobody has reached the level of his hockey career.

About National Sports Day

In 2012, the day first appeared in a list of celebratory days. For all the sports fans in the nation, the National Sports Day is the main event. Promoting and spreading awareness about different sports is the primary goal of celebrating National Sports Day.

To honor of the legendary hockey player “Major Dhyan Chand,” the Indian government has declared his birthday to be National Sports Day.

A three-time Olympic gold champion, Major Dhyan Chand played on the Indian national hockey team. In 1936, at the Olympic Games in Berlin, he was chosen to lead the Indian hockey team. From 1926 until 1948, Major Dhyan Chand scored over 400 goals for his national team, for a total of over 1,000 goals. He was also known as the “Wizard of Hockey”. The Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, was bestowed upon Major Dhyan Chand in 1956.

This year the theme of National Sports Day 2024 is Sport for the Promotion and Peaceful and Inclusive Societies

Note: The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award was renamed as the “major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award” by the Indian government in 2020.

National Sports Day celebrations

Observed annually in Rashtrapati Bhavana, National Sports Day is a nationwide recognized event. The National Sports Awards are given to the victors based on who has increased the significance of the tricolor flag.

Several other honors, like the Arjuna Award and the Dhronacharya Award, are presented to former players and athletes as part of the National Sports honors category. Not only that, but the “Dhyan Chand Award” is also bestowed on this day.
