Parshuram is Vishnu’s sixth incarnation in Hinduism who played an important role in both the Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is believed that Parshuram was born to a Brahmin sage Jamadagni and his Kshatriya wife Renuka on top of the Janapav hills in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Parshuram father Jamadagni, was a ancestor of Lord Brahma. Parshuram is often considered a brahma warrior. He had several characteristics that included violence, combat and bravery, serenity, caution and patience. He was believed to emerge at a period when immense evil existed on the planet, like many manifestations of Vishnu.
Date of Parshuram Jayanti 2023
This year Parshuram Jayanti will be celebrated on 22 April 2023. On the next day another important occasion in Hinduism “Akshaya Tritya” will also be observed.
Parshuram is also addressed as Rama Jamadagnya, Rama Bhargava and Veerarama in some Hindu Scriptures. Within some versions of Mahabharata, Parashurama is identified as the angry Brahmin who killed a large number of Kshatriya warriors with his axe(also known as Parshu) in order to restore the peace on earth as they were abussing their strength.
In Mahabharata, Parshuram taught the weapon arts to Bhisma, Drona and Karna.In the Ramayana, Parashurama gave the bow of Shiva to the father of Sita for her swayamvar.
The Puranas describe the fact that King Kartavirya Arjuna and his army have visited a Jamadagni rishi who has given offerings from his divine cow Kamadhenu to his guest and the entire army. Kamadhenu, also known as Surabhi, has been named a divine bovine goddess, Gou Mata, mother of all cows, identified in Hinduism. She’s one of beautiful abundance cow who gives her owner whatever he desires. King Arjuna Kartavirya requested Jamadagni’s cow, but Jamadagni declined because he needed the cow to perform his religious rituals.
When Parshuram was away from the house, the King forcibly takes the cow. Parashurama learns about this crime and gets angry. He challenged the king Kartavirya Arjuna for battle and according to Hindu Scriptures, Parashurama cut the Kartavirya Arjuna’s thousand arms one by one with his Parshu(Axe) which he received from the Lord Shiva.
