Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam died at the age of 74 due to COVID-19

A setback in the health of SP Balasubrahmanyam has been observed since 5 August 2020 at MGM Healthcare for symptoms of Covid-19. In the late-night of August 13, 2020, the health worsened and, on the recommendation of the specialist medical team that was with him, he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit ( ICU). On the 25th of September, he died due to COVID-19.

Balasubrahmanyam, a gifted singer, is widely esteemed for his remarkable vocal ability, intensely rich voice and mastery of style, technique and power. These qualities allowed him to articulate through various genres of Indian music, and he was highly sought-after by many of India’s composers for singing.He is also called as S. P. B. and Balu in the media.

Subrahmanyam has also offered voice to various actors, such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Salman Khan, Bhagyaraj, Mohan, Girish Karnad, Gemini Ganesh, Nagesh, Karthik, Raghuvaran, Vinodkumar, etc. 

A film directed by his mentor, Kodandapani, Balasubrahmanyam made his film music debut as a singer with Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna on Dec 15, 1966. He has since sung more than 40,000 songs in over 5 different Indian languages including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam. He holds the world record in World Records’ Guinness Book for having sung by any artist the most number of album recordings (Lata Mangeshkar holds a record for a female singer).

He began singing for several different language films.   At times, as he became very busy, he even sang 17 songs in the recording theatre in 12 hours. He also sang in Sanskrit and some found that his pronunciation of this language is very strong. SPB sings most introduction songs in Chiranjeevi and Rajinikanth movies. Most people think the sound of Balasubrahmanyam suits Kamal Haasan the most. Often people can’t even work out whether it’s chanting Kamal or singing Balu, or just talking Kamal or Balu.

Balasubrahmanyam Has released over 38,000 plus songs over a 40-year period, including movie songs and devotional numbers captured by numerous country recording companies. He Has released 21 songs for the composer Upendra Kumar in Bangalore at 9 a.m. in Kannada. Till 9 p.m. On February 8, 1981, which is a record .Also, recorded 19 Tamil songs in one day, and 16 Hindi songs in one day, which is a notable achievement.

Balasubrahmanyam was born in Konetammapeta near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh to the orthodox Brahmin family. He is the second of three sons and five daughters in a family. His Dad S. P. Sambamurthy was a well-known Harikatha exponent, and his sister S.P. Sailaja, married to Subhalekha Sudhakar, is a former actress-singer in Tollywood. He has a daughter, and a son, Pallavi, and S. P. B. Charan.
