The Difference between Detox and Rehab Treatments for Alcohol Addiction

Sydney, Australia is best known for its Sydney Opera House. However, visitors of the city may also enjoy the vibrant and easy-going lifestyle that the city has to offer. During night time, Sydney offers its visitors a diverse nightlife with lots of pubs and jazz haunts to unwind and listen to good music. Sydney residents like to drink, and therefore, the chances of visiting a bar without a crowd will not likely happen.

While Sydney has a laid-back lifestyle with an occasional drink or two during the day, it is still important to keep your drinking to a moderate level. Excessive drinking may result in health issues such as a damaged liver. Worst, constant drinking may develop into alcohol addiction. When a person gets addicted to alcohol, it is hard for him or her to stop the destructive habit unless he or she enters a Sydney Detox & Rehab program.

What is the Difference between Detox and Rehab?

If you want to recover from alcohol addiction, the best way of doing so is to be seeking a detox and rehab treatment. Although these two terms are usually used interchangeably, they are significantly different from one another. Both detox and rehab are important phases for the complete treatment of alcohol addiction; each treatment has its focus. Detox is generally aimed in treating the physical aspects of the addiction, while rehabilitation centres on psychological reasons. Here are some more details on what each stage of alcohol treatment does.

Detox. Detox is short for detoxification. It is defined as the elimination of all the toxins in the body so that treatment can start. For an alcohol addict, the detoxification process is the removal of all traces of alcohol in the body by purging the body of alcohol, letting the traces of alcohol get used up by the body naturally while preventing any additional alcohol from entering.

Detoxification of the body can be performed at home. However, there are times when the person undergoing a detox treatment may show signs of withdrawal syndrome, especially if that person has long been physiologically and psychologically dependent on alcohol. It is, therefore, best to enter into a Sydney Detox & Rehab program where the alcohol-dependent person may be placed under medical supervision. Detox is the first stage in successful addiction treatment. Only when there is no alcohol left in a person’s body can that person be ready for the next step.

Rehab. There are times when a person who completes an alcohol detox will not push through with the rehab phase. While this is allowable, most often than not, the person who did not go through rehab will fall into the addiction trap again. Rehab, short for rehabilitation, is a treatment program that aims to look at the psychological reasons or causes of the addiction. During the rehab process, expert counsellors will assess a person’s alcoholism by finding out what makes the person drink in the first place. Once the root cause is determined, counsellors will work with the patient to come up with ways to not resort to drinking when triggered.

The rehabilitation process takes a much longer time to complete. The person under rehab will be subjected to a holistic program in which his or her lifestyle choices are redirected to more productive avenues besides drinking. Rehab focuses more on the recovery and in making sure that the patient will have a better understanding of him/herself.

Persons with alcoholic addiction must know the root cause of their addiction and try to change their lifestyles. A Sydney Detox & Rehab program will allow them to live better lives.
